Radon Levels Across Minnesota

Minnesota has higher average radon levels than most other states in America. Our average radon level is over three times higher than the national average (MN Dept. of Health).
The EPA recommends reducing home radon if your level is at or above 4.0 pCi/L. Minnesota’s average level is 4.2 pCi/L, whereas the national average is 1.3 pCi/L.
Some research suggests that levels above 2.0 pCi/L warrant action to protect you and your family’s respiratory health. This means that all Minnesotan homeowners should have their home air tested for radon.
An Overview of Radon in Minnesota
Radon is measured in “pCi/L”, which stands for picocuries per liter. “Curies” are a unit of measurement for radioactivity, and since radon is a radioactive gas, we can track its levels based on the radiation it emits.
The radioactive particles radon emits can cause lung damage and, potentially, much higher chances of developing lung cancer. Radon exposure is the second-leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking, and Minnesota’s average picocuries per liter is over three times the average U.S. radon level.

Radon Levels in Minnesota Counties, Alphabetically
As you'll see below, many of the counties in Minnesota have tested highly for radon levels. What is normal in Minnesota is high in other areas around the country, which reinforces the need for families to test their homes for radon levels.
The information below was taken from the MN Department of Health's radon map which gathered information on radon levels from 2010 to 2020. If you see that your county tested with high radon levels, be sure to contact us for a free estimate.
